Montalegre is a Portuguese border village belonging to the district of Vila Real, the North Region, the sub-region of Alto Tâmega and the former province of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, with about 1,800 inhabitants (2011).
It is the seat of the municipality of Montalegre with an area of 805.46 km² and 10,537 inhabitants (2011[), subdivided into 25 parishes.[ 3] The municipality is bordered to the north by Spain (municipalities of Lobios, Muíños, Calvo de Randín, Baltar, Cualedro and Oímbra), to the east by Chaves, to the southeast by Boticas, to the south by Cabeceiras de Basto, to the southwest by Vieira do Minho and to the west by Terras de Bouro.
The highest point of the municipality is at Pico da Nevosa, at an altitude of 1546 meters, in Serra do Gerês. This peak is the highest in Serra do Gerês and consequently the highest in the North Region.

O ponto mais elevado do município encontra-se no Pico da Nevosa, a 1546 metros de altitude, na Serra do Gerês. Este pico é o mais elevado da Serra do Gerês e consequentemente o mais elevado da Região Norte.
